About Therapy with Wendy

Finding a therapist is hard.

Looking for a therapist is HARD! If you are looking for a therapist, you are in pain, and that pain probably has something to do with people who have hurt you.

At this point, you are supposed to figure out how to find a therapist whom you don’t know and divulge your hurts to them. What a daunting process!

Then you find what seems like the right person, and they are full, don’t take your insurance, or there is some other roadblock, and you want to give up.

Don’t give up!

I know what this process is like and how overwhelming it can be. I have been there myself, and I had help not giving up, and I will help you.

Not for a minute do I assume that I am the right therapist for everyone. It is essential to find a therapist who is an excellent fit on a relational level – one where there is a “click” on both sides.

Additionally, the therapist must have the appropriate training to address your problems effectively.

Take me for a test drive.

You don’t buy a car without taking it for a test drive, so it’s okay to take your therapist for a test drive. In fact, I encourage it.

First, we will conduct a complimentary video chat to gauge whether we are a good fit. If I don’t feel like I am the right therapist for you, I will tell you, and I make it easy for you and celebrate you saying no to me and help you find the right fit.

If we both decide to move forward after the initial chat, test drive number two typically involves mutually agreeing to go on a longer test drive of three sessions. Again, at the end of the three sessions, we will check in and see if this works well for both of us.

You might be surprised.

I do therapy differently and strive to leave you feeling better at the end of every session.

We will work on the challenging aspects, but a significant focus of my work will be helping regulate your nervous system. Therefore, we focus on helping you feel better as much as, or more than, working on the challenging aspects. This might seem counterintuitive, but my system, which I call the “therapy sandwich,” helps create a safe environment. The “meat” of the session, or the complex feelings and emotions, is at the heart of the session. The “buns” of the therapy sandwich are the beginning and end of the session.

For the first and last 10 minutes of the session, we will focus on exploring how well we can help you feel in your body. In my experience, doing therapy in this way makes it easier to face the hard stuff, as it is “held” by the “buns.”

About Wendy Gannett, LICSW, SEP

My passion is to help people feel awesome.

I love to see my clients transform from feeling trapped in a state of anxiety, depression, or numbness into the fully alive state where they can feel more joy and not get weighed down by more difficult emotions. I have been on this journey myself and know how it feels to have that weight lifted.

Initially, I received training in psychodynamic psychotherapy and have a Master’s in Social Work from Smith College School of Social Work. After practicing for about ten years, I became frustrated, feeling that I was helping my clients, but not as much as I wanted to. I felt like something was missing. Understanding helped, but people often still felt depressed, anxious, or had flashbacks even when they understood the why.

When I found somatic experiencing (SE), I knew I had discovered the missing piece, both for myself and my clients. I felt things release from my body as I completed my three-year training in SE and experienced an ease I never thought possible.

I now really love helping my clients experience this same transformation.

Here is a brief overview of my credentials.

In 1995, I received my master’s in social work from Smith College.

I  hold two certifications: one in EMDR (2005) and the other in Somatic Experiencing (2019). I have also completed advanced trainings with Peter Levine (who started SE) and the Touch Skills training with Kathy Kain.

I am also an Approved Assistant Teacher with Somatic Experiencing International (SEI) and am approved to provide the required sessions to SE students at all levels.

What do I do for fun?

I enjoy hiking, skiing, snowboarding, and outdoor swimming – I’m passionate about making the world a better place.
